People

I love painting and drawing people - portraits and figures.

I celebrate what it is to be human. A person's innate true beauty, something of their soul. My images are an emotional response not a super-realistic interpretation. I'm concerned with a subject’s energy or emotional state.

2 Women Looking

This piece is inspired by a painting I found in a junk shop by an unknown artist. I love the composition and the colours. I like how the faces are anonymous and we can bring our own interpretations to this piece. What are they looking at, what are we looking at? I like the relaxed poses and subtle warm palette; I feel instantly calm looking at this piece.

Reclining woman

This piece is inspired by one of my favourite painters Modigliani. I’m enjoying playing with the anonymous face, allowing the viewer to see the image as a whole, even abstract composition, rather than getting tied up with facial expression or personal emotion.

Self Portrait - Lockdown

This was painted in March 2020, during the initial lockdown, in one of the many moments where I wondered what was going on?  I wanted to capture my mood. Stuck indoors, feeling anxious but with a sense of intrigue and wonder at how things were working out. The shift in perspectives, the connections, the opportunities. So much to process. Dark, moody yet hopeful.

  • Giclee prints available from £30 plus P&P £7.50

Ruth #1

This is Ruth, a woman whom I have had the good fortune to meet via Instagram. She is a professional life model and works with her partner Richard. Check them out on Instagram @richard_ruth_art. During the lockdown, Richard and Ruth have been working remotely via Zoom classes and generously posting resource photos for artists to work from.

I love this pose, Ruth with a Kindle, relaxed and serene.

Beatrice #1

I've been learning how to draw portraits during lockdown with the help of an online class run by Raw Umber studios with a fantastic tutor Lizet Dingeman. This class has become a staple of my week, doing 10, 20 and 30 min poses from photographs. This model, Beatrice, has such a thoughtful and strong look which I really enjoyed capturing.

  • Original is available to buy £75 plus P&P at £7.50
  • Giclee prints available from £30 plus P&P £7.50

Woman #3

This image taken was from a small sketch I was sent by a friend. I've developed it into a colour pastel piece and added a cheese plant and the black and white stripes I’m so fond of. I love the combination of colours and graphic stripes against the curves of the body. I am reminded of Modigliani when I look at this. I love his work, the warmth of his palettes. This colour range is something that seems to filter through to a lot of my nude figurative art. I like the sense of the body radiating with a warm inviting glow.
